STORYLINE

Lisbon, 1506. Leonor and Benjamim are two teenagers in love. She comes from a traditional family; he, from a family of New Christians of Jewish origin. At the time, Lisbon is one of the most important trading ports in the Western world, yet it is stricken by plague and famine. Abandoned by the nobility, the poorer population is left at the mercy of religious fanaticism which, in April, leads to the massacre of thousands of Jews — men, women, and children. Their romance is cut short amidst the devastation. But Leonor survives, only to discover that love can transcend even death itself.
